Brushing technique

Brushing is very important to maintain your oral hygiene. But using the wrong method can damage your teeth and gums.

Identify the type of toothbrush to use. Consult your dentist. Usually a medium or soft brush should be preferred. Using a hard brush or over enthusiastic brushing should be avoided as it can lead to bleeding gums and wearing away of teeth.

Brush twice a day, once in the morning and once before going to bed.



Use minimal amount of toothpaste.

Place the toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees against your teeth. Using light circular strokes brush three teeth at a time. Start from the molar teeth on either side and brush 20-25 strokes at one site.

This technique is known as ‘Modified bass technique‘.



Mouthwashes like Listerine or Colgate plax contain antibacterial agents. These agents slow down the growth of bacteria on your teeth surface.They can be used once everyday. 2-3 ml of liquid can be used to gargle for 2-3 minutes every morning.



After every meal make sure you gargle once. It helps washing off the small particles of food which otherwise remains in the corners of mouth and becomes the culprit to start the decay process.


Sugar consumption

Sugar and sweets are an inevitable part of the Indian diet. They are the most dangerous things that you can consume to worsen the condition of your teeth .Fermentable forms of sugar like sucrose, lactose etc which we consume everyday start and stimulate decay process on your teeth surface. Among these, the ones consumed between the meals are more dangerous as minute   it always remain in the oral cavity adhering to the tooth surface,..And it doesn’t wash off that easily with a gargle alone. Superficial brushing is important.


Cleaning aids

These include dental floss, special brushes and toothpicks.

Such cleaning aids are only meant to enhance your oral hygiene. Using them on a regular basis can be both harmful and beneficial.

Floss: These are thread like aids made of fibre available in various types.

They can be twisted/non twisted, waxed/non waxed etc. These are basically meant for removing food particles lodged between your not use it more than 2-3 times a day, otherwise you will end up creating gaps between your teeth.

Inter Dental Brush: This is a small brush. It looks like the miniature version of a household bottle cleaner. It is used when there is abundant food lodgement and large spaces between your teeth. Do not use it according to your own wish. It should be used only after consulting your dentist.

Toothpicks: These are small wooden sticks with sharp ends, readily available at shops. We commonly see them at restaurants and enthusiastically grab a bunch of them. But what we probably did not know is that these can cause gaps or spaces between your teeth. They should be used minimally.
